On Wednesday, April 3, 2024, Goodwill Industries of Central Florida (GICF) marked a significant milestone in its history. A “golden” sledgehammer ceremony was held to kick-off the renovation of the Administrative Building, S.OBT retail store, and the space for Project Compass, an OCPS alternative school location that we have supported for more than 20 years. Originally housing a Montgomery Ward store, the property came under GICF’s stewardship in 1999, and now stands on the brink of a transformation emblematic of Goodwill’s dedication to the Central Florida community.

When the project is complete, the facility will include:

  • A substantially larger retail store to enhance the customer experience.
  • An improved donation area featuring covered drive-through lanes to protect donors and employees from the weather.
  • A modern and comfortable learning environment for Project Compass students and staff
  • Upgrades to the exterior of the building and landscaping to create a welcoming environment.
  • Updates to the Lynx bus stop in front of the building.

The event featured notable speakers including Goodwill’s President and CEO Ed Durkee, who provided insights into the renovation project. Max Brito, Chair of the GoodSource and Goodwill Foundation boards, shared historical perspectives as the lead architect during the previous remodel 25 years ago. Scott Wall, Chair of Goodwill’s Board of Directors, articulated the project’s significance for the people who make our mission possible, our employees. Alternative School Principal, William Tovine, District 3 School Board Member, Alicia Farrant, and Educator, Charnetta Starr, highlighted the impact of OCPS’ Alternative School program and Project Compass.

Additional guests in attendance included Orange County Commissioners Mayra Uribe and Emily Bonilla, Chief of Corrections Louis A. Quiñones from Orange County Corrections, OCPS Board Chair Teresa Jacobs, and School Board Members, Pam Gould and Vicki-Elaine Felder.

As we move forward with this renovation, we are inspired by the possibilities it brings. This initiative is more than a building project; it is a reaffirmation of our commitment to “Building Lives That Work®.” We look forward to the opportunities this renovation will create for our employees, our community, and the many individuals we serve through our mission.
